Residential solar panels provide an opportunity for a lot of homeowners to use an endless supply of renewable energy rather than burning coal, natural gas, or other fossil fuels for electricity. Solar power will become accessible to more and more people as the technology develops and the prices come down but for now it can still be quite difficult for some people to take advantage of this limitless energy supply.
For people that are building a house out in the country, opting for a photovoltaic solar setup may actually be more cost effective than bringing in public utilities from the nearest power line but for people that are in a more urban area residential solar panels are an investment that will take some time to pay for themselves. It can cost $25,000 or more for a system that can provide enough electricity for your entire home. It can take 10 years or more before the monthly savings surpass the amount you paid for having your system installed.
To help with the initial cost you may be able to take advantage of government rebates and tax credits. You may have to spend a bit of time making some phone calls or doing a little research to see what kind of programs are available in your local area but it would be time well spent if it means substantial savings. One place to start would be with your local power company. They would be able to tell you about any programs that you might be able to take advantage of and many municipal electric companies will have solar programs of their own.

For a lot of people residential solar panels are still too expensive. Even with grants, rebates, tax credits and other available programs the start up cost is still too great. For people who want to use renewable energy but don’t have deep enough pockets to pay $30,000 or $40,000 there is always the do it yourself option. There are some really good instructional courses available that can show you how to build your own photovoltaic systems for a tiny fraction of what you would pay for a professional installation.
If you have a lot of experience with various home repairs, building your own residential solar panels may sound like a fun project. For people with a little less experience it may seem like a daunting task and something that is just too difficult. Some of the courses available today make this seemingly impossible task as easy as following some simple instructions. All of the materials are available at your local hardware store and with step by step instructions, detailed diagrams, and how-to videos even the inexperienced and technically challenged people will be able to build their own solar panels for about $100 each. Being able to construct your own panels for 1/10 of the cost of what you would normally pay will allow you to put together a system that can reduce or eliminate your electricity bill and you will quickly see a very good return on your investment.
